Exciting Changes to Canadian Immigration Policies: Key Updates for Applicants 2024

Changes to Canadian Immigration Policies

The immigration authorities in Canada have recently rolled out significant updates that applicants should be aware of. These changes include a new temporary public policy for Hong Kong residents, an announcement on the 2024 Parents and Grandparents intake, and support for skilled temporary workers in Manitoba. Here’s a detailed look at these updates:

New Temporary Public Policy for Hong Kong Permanent Residence Applicants

IRCC Introduces Beneficial Policy for Hong Kong Applicants

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has unveiled a new public policy to aid Hong Kong residents applying for permanent residence. Starting May 27, 2024, eligible applicants can extend their status and obtain a new open work permit while awaiting their permanent residence decision.

To qualify Canadian Immigration Policies , applicants must:

  • Have applied for permanent residence under Stream A (in-Canada graduates) or Stream B (Canadian work experience) of the temporary public policy for Hong Kong residents.
  • Have held a work or study permit in the three years prior to their permanent residence application submission.

This public policy will be in effect for five years, allowing applicants to maintain their temporary status in Canada throughout the processing period.

Maintaining Legal Status in Canada : Changes to Canadian Immigration Policies

Applicants and their guardians must ensure their status is renewed as necessary. If a foreign national applies to extend their work or study permit before it expires, they retain legal status until a decision is made, known as “maintained status.”

For those whose temporary status expired within 90 days before applying for a new open work permit, this policy allows them to restore their status simultaneously. However, if the status expired more than 90 days prior, the application will not be approved.

2024 Parents and Grandparents Intake Announced

Invitation for Sponsorship Applications Begins May 21, 2024

Starting May 21, 2024, IRCC will send out invitations to potential sponsors for the 2024 Parents and Grandparents Program. Over approximately two weeks, 35,700 invitations will be issued to those who expressed interest in sponsoring their parents or grandparents back in 2020. The aim is to accept up to 20,500 complete applications for this intake.

For those not invited, the super visa remains an option, allowing parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years at a time with possible two-year extensions.

New Measures for Skilled Temporary Workers in Manitoba

Extended Status for Skilled Workers Under Manitoba’s Provincial Nominee Program

IRCC has granted Manitoba’s request to extend temporary resident status for potential nominees under the Provincial Nominee Program whose work permits are set to expire in 2024. This measure primarily benefits post-graduation work permit holders in the Manitoba Skilled Worker Provincial Nominee Program Expression of Interest pool.

This policy will allow 6,700 temporary workers to continue working while their applications are processed. Within two years, these foreign nationals are expected to receive nominations from Manitoba and eventually achieve permanent resident status.

IRCC is open to exploring similar measures with other provinces and territories to facilitate the transition of temporary residents to permanent status, addressing labor market needs across Canada.
